Education
In 2004 Michael took the
bold step of putting together a comprehensive beginner book under the
banner of ‘21st Century Drumming’ Book 1. Having taught since his late
teens he felt that his experiences imparting musical skills has
revealed fresh ways of allowing students to tap into their musical
potential.
This fun to use text combines styles such as rock, blues, punk and
country with a solid grounding in classical elements, ensemble playing
and reading as well as structured musicianship quizzes. The book is
topped off with an 83 track CD with play-along solos, duets, grooves
and a ‘built in’ metronome!
Michael also undertakes clinics, school incursions and workshops. In
2006 Michael was Artist in Residence at Hale Boys School in Perth,
Western Australia and also at Raha International School in Abu Dhabi,
the United Arab Emirates.
He has worked with violinist, Neil Barclay, who has broad interest in
music and music education, creating a number of workshops for students
at schools such as British School Al Khubeirat (Abu Dhabi) and GEMS
American Academy (Abu Dhabi). Currently they are undertaking ongoing
research into Khaleeji music (music of the Gulf region).
Please see the links/downloads page for teaching resources including
21st Century Drumming, small percussion ensemble pieces and drumset
solos.
Michael has recommenced
lecturing duties at SAE Dubai in the areas of music history and music
theory.
